CENTERBURG – With so many restaurants struggling in 2020, it’s not often that you hear of a new one opening during the pandemic, but that is the story of Eggmann’s Eatery in Centerburg.
It opened in August at the Table Rock Golf Club.
“It’s a little crazy, but we love this industry,” Kristina Hagemann, who owns the restaurant with her sister Jessica Earick, told the Mount Vernon News.
They had a location and were preparing to open in February of last year.
“Then COVID hit and we decided to put it on the back burner,” Hagemann said.
Then they found the golf course location, which was perfect for patio dining that had become so important during the pandemic. It also had a fully furnished kitchen.
The Centerburg community immediately embraced the new restaurant, Hagemann said
“They have been insanely supportive,” she said. “They keep coming back and bringing other people, praising us on Facebook and being incredibly supportive.”
It is a family endeavor. Jessica is the chef, Kristina the general manager.
“I’ve actually had my dad, mom and stepmom all in the kitchen together doing dishes,” Hagemann said.
She describes the restaurant as a “finer diner.” The food is traditional American with a twist.
“It’s burgers, and turkey and chicken salad,” Hagemann said. “It’s fresh, prepared daily. Everything is made from scratch. We try to use local ingredients.”
Eggmann’s offers dine-in breakfast and lunch, carryout and online ordering. The drink menu includes beer, wine, mimosas and Bloody Marys. Takeaway dinners are offered Monday through Friday.
It’s fine dining service with a small-town feel.
“Every time you walk through our doors, if you’ve been here before, we know who you are,” Hagemann said. “We know your name, we know about your kids and we know about your animals. We are very connected to our community. And I feel like the community is very connected to us.”
