At Lanning’s Foods in Mount Vernon, customers can still find a service that many big-box stores have all but abandoned: the old-fashioned butcher.
“We have six meat cutters,” Jim Dye, the store’s retail director, told the Mount Vernon News.
The meat is super fresh and hand cut daily.
“If the customer wants a custom cut, our butchers can do that,” Dye said. “They might want to buy a whole tenderloin and have it custom-cut into 10 steaks at a certain thickness. Thickness is really important to a lot of customers. Some people like thick steaks or pork chops. Other people like them a little thinner.”
Lanning’s operates a Fresh Market and is also a wholesaler to restaurants across Ohio.
“We do such a strong commercial meat business that we can bypass the product going into a secondary warehouse,” Dye said. “The meat is super fresh because we are the primary warehouse. You couldn’t find a fresher piece of meat in any retail establishment.”
The same freshness standard applies for the fresh produce operation.
“We buy the product straight from the farmer,” Dye said. “It doesn’t go through multiple stages of warehousing before it gets to us.”
