The Bulldog's Shane Knepp scored seven points during a 14-2 run in the third quarter that put the East Knox boys basketball up for good. The Bulldogs held off rival Danville for a 48-41 victory in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Friday, Jan. 8, in Howard.
Knepp scored a game-best 23 points, and had four steals to the lead the Bulldogs (5-4, 3-3), who were tied with the Blue Devils at 25 before the deciding run.
Weston Melick had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Sam Whitney had nine points, 10 boards and a pair of blocks. Peyton Lester had three assists and three steals to go with four points and Terry Jacobs had four assists to lead East Knox. The Bulldog's have won four consecutive games after starting the season 1-4.
Wyatt Weckesser had 13 points and five rebounds, Darren Mickley added nine points and three steals and Cam Miller chipped in eight points for the Devils (0-9, 0-5).
Levi Lyons had seven points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks and Walker Weckesser had four points, three boards, two helpers and a couple of steals for Danville.
Highland 59, Northmor 43
Highland bridged the break with a 36-9 run that completely turned the game around in a 59-43 win over Northmor in KMAC play on Friday, Jan. 8, in Sparta.
Gavin Hankins recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, adding a pair of steals to lead the Fighting Scots (3-6,1-3), who have won three of the last four games.
Jordan Bellamy had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists and Brock Church also scored 12 points, adding six boards and a pair of assists to back Hankins.
Rider Minnick had four assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals to go with four points. Landon Remmert finished with four points, two boards, two steals and two blocks for Highland, which outscored Northmor 55-27 after the first quarter.
Logan Mariotti scored 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers, while Kooper Keen added 13 points to lead the Golden Knights (2-8,1-5). Mariotti had five steals and three rebounds and Keen had five boards and three steals for Northmor.
Preston Harbolt had five points, with Maxton Lower had four points, seven boards, two helpers and two steals. Graisen Cass had four points, three steals and two assists and Griffin Workman dished out three assists for the Knights in the setback.
Cardington-Lincoln 70, Mount Gilead 66
Zach Lester was one of four to score in double figures with 22 points to help Cardington hold off host Mount Gilead in a KMAC game on Friday, Jan. 8, in Mount Gilead.
Trey Brininger had 18 points, Mason White added 12 points and Nate Hickman chipped in 10 points to lead the Pirates (8-3, 5-2), who led 32-25 at the break after an 18-9 opening frame.
Jackson Huffer poured in 28 points and Elijah Chaffin went for 25 points to lead MG (3-7, 2-5), who pulled within 48-46 at the end of the third quarter.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Utica started strong, but couldn’t sustain as visiting Johnstown used a big second quarter to take the lead for a 65-35 win in Licking County League play on Friday, Jan. 8, in Utica.
Cayden Wagner scored 21 points, Brooke Barb added 17 points and Abigail Adkins chipped in 15 points to lead the Johnnies (6-6, 2-4) who used a 24-4 in the second quarter.
Shawna Blake scored 19 points to lead Utica (1-10, 0-7), which opened the game 11-2.
