Basketball roundup: Trojans nab Bobcat Classic title

The Centerburg boys basketball team caught fire and knocked down nine shots from beyond the arc in a 49-35 win over host Grandview Heights in the championship game of the Bobcat Classic, on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Grandview.

Isaiah Reynolds scored 10 points on the strength of two 3-pointers to lead the Trojans (8-1). Landon Griffith hit three 3s and finished with nine points; and Carter Jones, who took home tournament MVP, added eight points for Centerburg, which pushed a five-point halftime lead into a 36-26 advantage through three quarters.

Aiden Leslie led the Bobcats (2-1) with 14 points.

Mount Vernon 54, Marion Harding 45

The Yellow Jackets used a 17-9 second quarter to cruise to their third consecutive victory, a 54-45 decision over Marion Harding in non-league play on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at The Hive in Mount Vernon.

Dayne Burgess and Beau Bridges scored 12 points apiece, and Blake Meyer added 11 to lead the Jackets (3-5), who led 29-24 at the half and 37-30 through three quarters.

Payne Ratliff poured in 21 points and Wes Stokes had 12 points to lead the Presidents (2-2), who led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Fredericktown 52, Columbus Academy 48

Ty Hatfield buried three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to help the Freddies earn a comeback victory over host Columbus Academy on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Gahanna.

Hatfield had five 3-pointers on the night and was backed by Caleb Sheriff with 11 points to lead the Freddies (7-0), who trailed 30-19 at the break.

Kevin Reeves scored 17 points and Tanner Compton added 10 points to lead the Vikings (3-2), who led 17-8 after one quarter and ballooned that lead at the half before Fredericktown closed within 40-36 at the end of the third.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Centerburg started strong, taking a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. But host Tree of Life rallied from there to earn a 52-42 victory in non-league play on Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Columbus.

Keyonna Walker scored 16 points, Paris Richardson added 13 points and Elisha Smith chipped in 10 points to lead Tree of Life (5-1), which rallied in the second quarter to take a 26-24 lead into the locker room before expanding it to 39-30 through three.

Chloe Goulter led Centerburg (3-8) with 14 points.

Lakewood 46, Highland 31

Camryn Martindale went for a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals; and the Lancers rolled to a 46-31 victory over Highland in non-league play on Tuesday, Dec. 29, in Hebron.

Savannah Fitzpatrick knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 15 points to lead the Scots (3-7). Maddy Gordon had five rebounds, Emma West had four boards and Peyton Carpenter had three assists to back Fitzpatrick.

Alexa Cummins had 10 points and Emma McLean chipped in eight points for Lakewood (2-6), which overcame a 9-4 deficit after one quarter to outscore the Scots 36-15 in the middle two frames.
