West Holmes’ pressure defense gave the Mount Vernon girls basketball team fits in an Ohio Cardinal Conference game on Thursday, Dec. 3.
The host Knights had 17 steals in the game, including eight during a 13-6 first quarter that turned into a 61-34 victory in Millersport.
Kinsey Patterson posted four steals to go with 11 points to lead West Holmes. Claire Reynolds had a game-high 12 points and added three rebounds and two steals for the Knights (3-0, 1-0), who led 30-15 at the break and 42-24 through three quarters.
Sydney Lyons led the Yellow Jackets (1-2, 1-1) with 12 points, Eli Trace added seven points and five rebounds, McKenna Brokaw chipped in six points and four rebounds and Cora Lepley dished out three assists.
Clear Fork 48, Fredericktown 40
Pacey Chrastina scored 13 points and Bella Conrad added 12, including six in the third quarter, to help host Clear Fork take control in a 48-40 non-league win over Fredericktown on Thursday, Dec. 3, in Bellville.
Gabby Daniels led all scorers with 14 points for the Freddies (1-2), who were knotted with the Colts 26-26 at the break.
Morgan Galco added 10 points for the Clear Fork (1-2).
Mount Gilead 51, Northmor 42
Holly Gompf scored a game-high 17 points to lead Mount Gilead to a 51-42 win over Northmor in KMAC play in Galion on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
Madilyn Elson scored seven of her nine points to help MG (3-1, 1-1) salt it away with an 18-12 fourth quarter.
Lexi Wenger led the Golden Knights (1-3, 0-2) with 15 points and Paige Caudill added nine points.
Bloom-Carroll 58, East Knox 38
Emily Bratton scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter to help host Bloom-Carroll get off to a fast start en route to a 58-38 win over East Knox in non-league play on Wednesday, Dec. 2, in Carroll.
Shanda Melick scored 14 points, Laura Keith added eight points and Madi Annett chipped in seven points for East Knox (0-1).
McKenzie Powers added 11 points and Reese Pittman scored 10 points for B-C (2-0).
Boys basketball
Ty Hatfield went for 24 points and 11 assists to lead Fredericktown to a 79-44 season-opening win at Lakewood in non-league action on Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Hebron.
Lincoln Cunningham added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists; and Caleb Sheriff chipped in nine points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Freddies (1-0); who led 37-13 at the break and finished the game with 24 assists on 30 field goals.
Kaid Carpenter had nine points and nine rebounds for Fredericktown, which won the rebounding battle 35-27.
Trenton Collins led the Lancers (0-1) with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Coshocton 56, Danville 42
Wyatt Weckesser scored 16 points, but the Blue Devils came up short in their season-opener at Coshocton on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Darren Mickley added nine points and Walker Weckesser chipped in seven for Danville (0-1) in the non-league contest.
Abe Jarvis connected on four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead Coshocton. Zach Jennings scored six points and Jacob Lonsberry added five as Coshocton built a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The duo finished with 12 points apiece.
Johnstown 55, Northmor 37
Gavin Foe scored a game-high 21 points to lead Johnstown by Northmor in a non-league game in Galion on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
Foe added seven rebounds and a pair of steals; and Tylar Cox had 13 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists to help spark the Johnnies (1-0); who led 29-17 at the break before blowing it open with a 13-5 third quarter.
Kooper Keen had 11 points, four rebounds and three blocks to lead the Golden Knights (0-2).
Patriot Prep 47, East Knox 36
Xavier Smith-Lindsey scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half to lead host Patriot Prep to a 47-36 win over East Knox in non-league play on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
Weston Melick scored 15 points to lead the Bulldogs (0-1), and Terry Jacobs chipped in nine points.
Dwayne Gilmore had 11 points for the Eagles (2-0), who broke out for 33 points in the second half after the game was tied 14-14 at the break.
Women’s basketball
Kayla Kitley went for 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead host Taylor to an 86-46 win over MVNU in Crossroads League play on Wednesday, Dec. 2, in Upland, Ind.
Lauren James and Madisyn Fischer scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the Trojans (6-2, 2-1); who outrebounded MVNU 56-26.
Hope Custer had 11 points, Sage Brannon added 10 points and Erin Boehm chipped in nine points for the Cougars (0-3, 0-1), who played their first game since Nov. 6.
