DANVILLE – Joel D. Johnson, 83, of Danville, formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, at the Delaware Court Health Care Center. He was born on Nov. 9, 1936, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Dr. Josiah and Margaret (Wiseman) Johnson.

Joel was a graduate of Ligonier High School in Pennsylvania, and he dutifully and proudly served in the United States Army as an MP stationed in Germany.

Joel was employed in the telecommunications industry for many years. He retired from Nortel Networks Inc. He enjoyed golfing, watching and cheering on his beloved Steelers, reading, playing cards and eating good food. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Gailor) Johnson, whom he married on Feb. 14, 1971; a son, David (Carla) Johnson of Richwood; a daughter, Jennifer Johnson of Columbus; three grandchildren, Bodie Johnson and twins, Isaac and Isabella Johnson; and many other family members and longtime friends.

Besides his parents, Joel was preceded in death by two brothers, William Johnson and Richard Johnson; and a half brother, J. Barton Johnson.

The family will observe a Celebration of Life service at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joel’s name may be made to a charity of one's choice.
