Former East Knox High School standout Drew Salyers, now a freshman on the Indiana University men’s golf team, fired a 10-under-par 134 to win the Indiana PGA Indianapolis Open.

Salyers shot a 7-under 65 on Oct. 26 before coming back with a 3-under 69 on Oct. 27 at Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.

Salyers highlighted the first round with an eagle on the 15th — a par-4, 430-yard hole. He finished with 11 birdies, including six in the second round. His only blemishes over 36 holes were a double-bogey on the ninth hole and a bogey on 17, both of which came in his second round.

He beat out 73 other golfers, including Eric Steger of Westfield, Indiana; and Sean Rowen of Greenwood, Indiana; who tied for second with a 4-under 140 over the two-day event.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Mount Vernon Nazarene University's goalkeeper stood on her head, stopping 11 shots in goal. But host Grace got a goal from JJ Aalbue, who got one through in the 17th minute to lift the Lancers to a 1-0 win in Crossroads League play in Winona Lake, Indiana.

Alexa Skal led the Cougars (4-4-2, 3-3-2) with two shots on goal.

Bethany Blackwood had four saves for the Lancers (5-2-1, 4-2-1).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Audrey Brininger had 19 kills and Liz Long added 14 to lead host Cardington to a 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 victory over Centerburg in the second round of the Division III district tournament on Oct. 24.

Long added a team-high 18 digs to her ledger and Kyleigh Bonnette dished out 40 assists to lead the third-seeded Pirates.

Taylor Scowden had 14 digs and three blocks, Gracie Wolford had 13 assists and seven digs and Stella Weisbrod had 11 digs and four kills to lead the 12th-seeded Trojans (7-13).

Cardington def. Worthington Christian 25-20, 25-27, 25-19, 18-25, 15-6

Brininger had 25 kills and 11 digs to help the Pirates outlast Worthington Christian in a Division III district semifinal on Oct. 28.

Kyleigh Bonnette dished out 55 assists and served up five aces; Liz Long added 20 digs, 11 kills and four aces; Cadie Long had 27 digs and Ashlee Tharp had 4.5 blocks for Cardington. Izzy Wickline (15 kills and three aces) and Kayleigh Ufferman (16 digs) also had strong performances for the Pirates (17-5).

Worthington Christian def. Fredericktown 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18

The visiting Freddies, seeded 11th in the Division III district tournament, battled hard to force a fourth set but ultimately fell at seventh-seeded Worthington Christian in the second round on Oct. 24 in Worthington.

Lindsey Boeshart had 15 kills and 24 digs, Audrey Bouton added 12 kills and 4.5 blocks, Katie Mull dished out 22 assists, Grace Sipes had 21 digs and Julia Partington had 15 assists for the Freddies (9-10).

Liv Fenstermaker had 20 digs, 10 kills and three aces; Libby Dalton had 25 assists, Phoebe Williams added 17 digs and Tori Moore had three aces for the Warriors.

Newark Catholic def. Danville 25-23, 25-7, 25-12

Brynn Peddicord served up six of her team’s 13 aces to lead the second-seeded Green Wave past eighth-seeded Danville in the third round of the Division IV district tournament on Oct. 24 in Newark.

Emma Franks tallied 11 kills, Brooklyn Smith dished out 26 assists and Camille Fuller had 16 digs for Newark Catholic.
