Ohio EPA Meeting Set for Phillips Drive Bank Restoration Application

Ohio EPA will hold a virtual public hearing to take comments on an application for a water quality certification related to the proposed Phillips Drive bank restoration in Mount Vernon.

During the virtual hearing, which will begin at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2020, the Agency will give a short presentation on the application and answer questions from the public. A hearing will immediately follow, during which the public can submit comments on the record about the application. Citizens who want to participate must register in advance for the meeting.

The application proposes to stabilize and restore a portion of the left descending bank of the Kokosing River along Phillips Drive. If approved, discharges from the activity would result in degradation to, or lowering of, the water quality of the Kokosing River. Proposed degradation of water quality would be offset through appropriate mitigation. Ohio EPA will consider technical, economic, social, and environmental aspects of the project before deciding whether to issue or deny the certification.

Written comments may be submitted during the virtual public hearing, or emailed to the attention of Bonita Dennis at epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov, or via mail to Ohio EPA-DSW, Attn: Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049. All comments received at the virtual hearing or via mail by close of business Oct. 6, will be considered by Ohio EPA prior to final action on this proposal.

Thomas J. Evans Foundation Helps Central Ohio Technical College Secure New Building

NEWARK, Ohio, September 16, 2020 — Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) has found a much-needed future home for its Institute for Public Safety. The Thomas J. Evans Foundation recently purchased the former JBA building at 1000 Sharon Valley Road, Newark, and arranged a charitable lease with the college. The 6500-square-foot building will be named Thomas J. Evans Hall to pay tribute to the longstanding and exceptional partnership between the college and the Evans Foundation.

With the ongoing renovation of COTC’s Pataskala campus at 8660 E. Broad St., Reynoldsburg, which will greatly expand classroom and laboratory space at the facility, the college was searching for a new home for its Institute for Public Safety, which had previously been housed at the campus. Thomas J. Evans Hall, situated less than one mile from the college’s Newark campus, will provide convenient access to expanded educational offerings for the Institute. COTC is in the beginning stages of planning long-term renovations to realize the building’s future potential.
