MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man was hit by a semi-truck while riding his bike on U.S. 13 south of Mount Vernon Thursday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:55 a.m., according to 911 dispatch records. David McElroy, 22 of Mount Vernon, was traveling northbound on his bicyle when an International semi also traveling northbound, driven by Craig Sand, 64 of Newark, collided with McElroy.

Ohio State Highway Patrol, Mount Gilead Post Trooper Kamal Nelson said it appears that Sand was attempting to pass McElroy, who appeared to be changing lanes. McElroy swerved in front of Sand, causing the two to collide and throwing McElroy into a ditch.

Nelson does not suspect that any drugs or alcohol were involved.

The patrol attempted to speak to McElroy at the hospital after the accident, but he was already discharged as he only suffered minor injuries.

“We’re still trying to make contact with Mr. McElroy to hear his side of the story,” Nelson said. Nelson also mentioned that McElroy was not wearing a bicycle helmet or any protective gear.

Sand was wearing his seatbelt and did not sustain any injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
