Ohio Senate Bill 104 is raising concerns in Mount Vernon, as Mayor Matt Starr discussed in his recent podcast episode of "Chat with Mayor Matt." The bill could limit local authority over short-term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo, which Mayor Starr believes could impact the community's ability to address issues such as noise, parking, and neighborhood character.
Mayor Starr emphasized that while short-term rentals can benefit tourism and homeowners, maintaining a balance is crucial. He said, "This bill would strip away our local authority to strike that balance," highlighting the potential loss of the city's right to regulate land use under Ohio’s Home Rule authority.
The mayor expressed worries about public safety and housing affordability if SB 104 passes. He noted that residents have raised concerns about unfamiliar renters affecting neighborhood safety and increasing housing costs. "Every time a single-family home becomes a full-time Airbnb, that’s one fewer house available for a Mount Vernon family to live in," he said.
Starr urged residents to learn more about the bill and contact their state senator to express their desire for local governance. He concluded by encouraging continued community discussions: "We only protect our home rule rights by standing up and speaking out together."
