The Freddies had to dig themselves out of quite a bit of a hole in the second and third quarters when the Vikings outscored them 18-4 and 12-10, but the Freddies were ultimately able to come back and eventually win the game in the final seconds of both the fourth quarter and overtime.

“I think our biggest takeaway is our guys’ ability to stay together and to continue to kind of rise above,” said Fredericktown coach Derek Dibling. “There were a lot of things that weren’t going our way, but we had guys step up and kind of take charge and make big plays. We needed big plays. There’s a no quit mentality with this group and I’m extremely proud of how they handled the ups and downs and the adversity, because Columbus Academy, they play. They are a solid team.”

The Fredericktown boys were able to move past any early game mistakes and inconsistencies that might have prevented them from winning the game. They also got some much needed help at the end of the game from players like Sheriff who really stepped up and took control of not only the game, but also a clutch finish.

“At times offensively, I thought that we looked pretty good,” Dibling said. “Early season you are just kind of sorting through a lot of things and a lot of inconsistencies. There were some good moments and then some really, really ugly moments, but enough good moments and big moments when we needed guys to step up, especially there at the end; making the right play. We had way too many turnovers and were sloppy at times, but again we have to give a lot of credit to Columbus Academy and their defensive pressure. I’m proud of our team’s effort and their no quit mentality. We really push team first.”

The top scorers for Fredericktown were Lincoln Cunningham (23 points, including five 3-pointers), Sheriff (16 points), and Terry Fearn (10 points). Sheriff scored six of his points, including game winner, in overtime.

The Freddies will return to action Tuesday, playing host to Newark Catholic. The jayvee start the night at 6 p.m.
