Butler charged for threats with box cutter at Freedom Center

MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man was arrested after an incident July 19 at the Freedom Center that involved a box cutter.

Brandon Butler, 22, was arrested and detained after he allegedly threatened people while brandishing a box cutter in the lobby of the Freedom Center in the 100 block of East Gambier Street in Mount Vernon.

According to Mount Vernon Police reports, police arrived at the location and found Butler seated and not holding the box cutter.

The authorities advised Butler to keep his hands visible and they asked him multiple times to stand up and put his hands behind his back and he didn’t comply. He also never responded to the question of where the box cutter was and refused to walk to the patrol car on his own power after being cuffed. The box cutter was found in his front pocket after a search.

After being placed in the car, Butler allegedly kicked the door more than once and hit his head on the cage and the door of the patrol car.

He was transported to the Knox County Jail and charge with one count of aggravated menacing, a misdemeanor of the first degree.

He was given an OR bond and released from jail on Monday.
