Vincent Jingwei Baker took first in the Ohio High School Chess Championship April 6-7. He will proceed to the National Denker Tournament of high school champions in August.


MOUNT VERNON — 15-year-old National chess master Vincent Jingwei Baker from Mount Vernon came in clear first place in the Ohio High School (grades 9-12) State Chess Championship in Cleveland on April 6-7. As the winner of the championship, Vincent has earned the right to represent Ohio at the prestigious National Denker Tournament of High school champions from August 3-6 in Orlando, Florida.
He will compete for the title of Denker Champion by playing against the state champions from all the other states. This has been a very successful year since December for Vincent, who has earned first place in all the chess tournaments he competed. This summer he will be traveling to different open tournaments including the North American Junior Chess Championship in Carolina as well as the World Open in Philadelphia.
Along with his sister, Victoria Baker who is also a two-time Ohio All Girls State Champion, they have won numerous individual trophies, team trophies, plaques and other prize awards. In the last two years, the siblings have founded a summer chess camp and volunteered to teach chess to a full house of young children from the Mount Vernon community.
