COLUMBUS — The Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference claimed one third of the 12 District qualifying positions out of Friday’s Girls Division II Sectional tournament at HP Lanes in Columbus.
KMAC champion Cardington earned the Sectional championship by over 200 pins with score of 3,534. Fredericktown followed in sixth place (3,077), and Highland placed eighth (3,051). Centerburg was the 11th qualifying team at 2,903. Northmor was only six pins in back of 12th-place Grandview Heights (2,873-2,867) to finish 13th, Utica was 17th (2,780) and Mount Gilead 20th (2,671) out of 31 total teams.
Cardington senior Laynee Wilson claimed the individual championship by 28 pins over Kynna Byrne of Pleasant, 584-556. Wilson had the tournament-high score of 245 in her first game, one of only four 200 games on the day, and subsequent scores of 170 and 169 to finish at 584.
Two more Pirates, Laney Sherbourne and Addie Wilhelm, each turned in top-10 efforts. Sherbourne had games of 190-176-162 to place fifth (528), and Wilhelm shot 168-186-169 to take seventh (523). Frankie Arnold (153-151-165) had a 469 series, and KMAC individual title-holder Morgan Lehner (132-149-172) shot a 453.
Macey Neer (150-192-146) paced Fredericktown with a 488, good for 13th place, and Hannah Vaughn had one of the 200 games (143-130-211) in taking 16th place at 484. Makenna Andrew (128-157-167) had a score of 452, and Leah Staton (117-136-139) closed her day at 392. Emma Stokes (122-164) had a two-game score of 286, and an unnamed substitute added a 93.
Courtney Weikel (169-184-152) made the top 10 for Highland, earning 10th place at 505. Autumn Burson (164-160-161) claimed 15th place with a 485, and Erin Conner (133-140-154) had a score of 427. Paige Hicks (104-152-135) shot a 391, and Madie Zamer (99-153-109) a 361.
Aubrey Clippinger (188-134-158) earned 20th place for Centerburg with a 480, and Jordan Climer (167-132-161) followed in 27th place with a 460. Sophia Compton (155-148-107) had score of 410, and Catherine Elfrink (168-151-99) fired a 418. Madison Dennis (132) and Zoe Stephens (128) each bowled one game, and another sub shot a 95.
Maddie Hoverland (176-147-135) took the top spot (30th) for Northmor with a 456, which earned her a District qualification as an individual. Emilie Drumm (137-149-150) trailed with a 436, and Kristen Bittner (160-121-137) had a score of 418. Tory Carver (88-132-168) fired a 388, and Christin Eichler (104-132-103) finished at 339.
Courtney Melvin (197-134-151) won a place at district for Utica by placing 19th with a 482, and Jordan Lacy (124-117-185) had a score of 426. Noel Frakes (124-142-151) fired a 417, Meredith Pierpont (121-121-107) a 349, Courtney Sturgell (126-135) a 261 and Alexis White had a one-game tally of 96.
Madison Noble (156-151-159) won her way to the districts with a 24th-place score of 466 for Mount Gilead. Lacey Baldwin (128-158-136) shot a 422, and Madison Mathwig (107-158-116) scored a 381. Molly Murphy (115-114—229) and Morgan Murphy (111-110—221) each bowled two games, and Makayla Meyer (125) Sydney Straight (100) bowled one game apiece.
Paris Frazee (99-136-95—330), Mayah Scott (110-96-84—292) and Carlyee Daniel (69-101-82—252) competed for East Knox.
The Division II boys sectional will take place today at HP Lanes, and the District tournament begins Thursday at 9 a.m.
