All 10 local high school girls basketball programs entered the 2023 OHSAA Girls Basketball Playoffs and there is one team standing, as sectional competition reaches the final round. In Division IV, Region 15 play, Mount Gilead continues on, as Danville fell one game short of the finals.

High School Boys Basketball, Feb. 16: Centerburg 52, Elgin 49

Ten local high school teams entered the 2023 OHSAA girls basketball playoffs a week ago, and only two remain going into the semifinals, as Mount Gilead and Danville have qualified into the next round of the Division IV, Region 15 competition.

No. 16 Northmor 34, No. 8 Cardington-Lincoln 25. Sixteenth-ranked Northmor (12-10, 7-6) trailed at halftime to No. 8 Cardington-Lincoln (11-11, 8-5), but a big second quarter led by Riley and Lauren Johnson propelled the Golden Knights to a comeback upset 34-25 win over the Pirates in the opening round of the Division III, Region 10 OHSAA tournament.

Local high schools are scheduled for first-round games in the 2023 OHSAA Regional Playoffs.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) has released its brackets for the 2023 state and regional basketball tournaments.

Three local wrestlers won championships and two took home silver at the 2023 Freddie Invite wrestling tournament, Jan. 14.

Highland’s Wetzel and Utica’s Smith wins wrestling crowns at Licking Valley Invite. Highland and Utica each had a championship performance at the Licking Valley Wrestling Invitational at Licking Valley High School in Newark on Jan. 7, and Highland also saw two second-place finishes.

Joining Danville’s linebacker Levi Lyons, who Monday was named Division-VII Defensive Player of the Year, Highland’s junior running back Dane Nauman was named Division-V Offensive Player of the Year on Tuesday by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association, which also selected its All-Ohio teams.

Football All-Ohio teams were announced Monday by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association, and Danville linebacker Levi Lyons was selected as Division VII Defensive Player of the Year, while Mount Gilead football coach Mike Reid was named Division VI co-Coach of the year.

The last two local teams left standing, Cardington-Lincoln and Highland both lost in their Regional Semifinal matches
