The Mount Vernon News sports department’s MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK is a weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools. This week’s ATHLETE of the WEEK winner is a second-time honoree, Levi Lyons (Danville football).

Held scoreless, and down 20 points heading into the fourth quarter, the Danville Blue Devils performed a comeback for the ages and took down a determined Lucas team, 27-20, Saturday night.

Following an epic playoff win over Hillsdale, Danville continues its quest for a state football title against the Lucas Cubs.

The Danville Blue Devils (10-2) marched into the OHSAA Division 7, Region 25 semifinals with a 42-41 victory over Hillsdale (7-5) on Friday night.

Friday night at Howard, two local football rivals fought it out in the Knox County version of Army-Navy or Ohio State-Michigan.

Friday’s Mount Gilead Indians at Danville Blue Devils matchup, featuring two of the best teams in the Knox Morrow conference, was a battle of two halves. The first half featured blocked punts, turnovers, and deep shots down the field, while the second displayed a Johnny Football regen (Matt Bland) trying to will his team back into the game.

The Danville baseball team is coming off a tough season in which the Blue Devils went 2-14 and were 0-10 in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC). And while the school has historically known for its football team, Coach Brian Bratton said that with a team full of hungry players, this could be a good chance to make their own history.

There’s a real sense of community support for the Danville High School drama department’s upcoming presentation of “School of Rock.” More than 50 students are involved on stage or behind the scenes.

A put-back basket a fraction of a second late ended Danville’s basketball season at the boys Division IV Central District Semifinal at Johnstown-Monroe High School. In a game that featured scoring runs, scoring table issues, a smothering trapping defense and a shot a hair after the buzzer sounded, the Blue Devils came out on the short end of a 53-52 loss at the hands of the Grove City Christian Eagles.

The 2021 Danville Lady Blue Devils won their sixth consecutive District title, finishing 20-8 and scoring at 270-103 run differential. They return only two seniors, but optimism runs high that they can continue business as usual and go even further in post season play..

Lady Pirates upset by Johnnies in bid to move on in play-offs. The dream season sloganed as “The Last Dance,” by head coach Jamie Edwards, for the Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates, is over. In mid-January, few would have figured that C-L would go one-and-done in the play-offs, but that was before a struggling three-week stretch of a half-dozen games, beginning with a January 17 loss to River Valley, which ended C-L’s 51-game regular season unbeaten streak. The Lady Pirates went 3-3 over those six games.

Keaura Shilling, a four-year letterman for the Danville Blue Deville’s softball team, signed a letter of intent to play her college ball at Capital University in Bexley, Ohio (near Columbus). Shilling will join the Comets after playing her senior year at Danville.

This week, a female basketball leader calmly won an OT game from the foul stripe, and a male hoops star made 3-pointers seem like lay-ups.

Lady Trojans fight valiantly but fall to Danville’s huge second half. In a tale of two halves, the Centerburg Lady Trojans gave all the fight the favored Danville Lady Blue Devils could handle at home, Jan. 26, but Danville’s huge second half was enough to win the game. The first half was won by Centerburg, 28-24, but the Blue Devils ran away with the second half 36-14 to take a 60-42 victory at home, for their seventh win in a row.
