Mount Vernon proudly dedicated the "Let Freedom Ring Blue Star Family Bell Circle" at American Heritage Park on Thursday morning, honoring Blue Star Families who stand beside the nation's service members.

The ceremony took place on July 2 at American Heritage Park behind the historic CA&C Depot. The event was free and open to the public, featuring remarks from local leaders, the Executive Director of America 250-Ohio, and musical performances by MTVarts students.

Among the speakers was Darin Prince, a local principal and active member of the Ohio Army National Guard, who reminded attendees that while he signed the line to serve, his family did not, yet they continue to show up every day.

The monument pays tribute to Blue Star Families, those with immediate family members currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, underscoring the shared sacrifices made both on the front lines and at home. In the days leading up to the dedication, the City emphasized that the installation honors the sacrifices of loved ones who support service members at home.

“While the Blue Star symbol traditionally honors active-duty service members, this installation specifically highlights the sacrifices made by the loved ones who support them at home,” the City noted in its press release.

The bell circle itself is designed as an interactive experience. Featuring 41 uniquely tuned bells arranged in a circle, the installation allows participants to walk around and strike the bells, producing the melody “My Country ’Tis of Thee.” Michigan-based artist Tom Kaufman handcrafted the bells from recycled welding and oxygen tanks, cutting, tuning, welding, and mounting each to a circular steel structure before powder-coating. The result is a striking public art piece that blends craftsmanship with patriotism.

The unveiling of the handcrafted bell circle set the stage for the City’s words of gratitude and invitation.

“Thank you to everyone who helped make this special day possible. We invite you to stop by, ring the bells, and let freedom ring!” the City stated.

Earlier this month, the City announced a major milestone: the decorative rock centerpiece that will hold a permanent plaque has been placed at American Heritage Park next to the CA&C Depot, thanks to Mack Industries, Inc.

“Every great melody needs a strong foundation, and this rock is ready to anchor music, memories, and recognition of our Blue Star Families,” the City shared in its update.

With the voices of leaders, the resonance of bells, and the presence of families, Mount Vernon marked this dedication as a day of unity, remembrance, and community pride.
