Mount Vernon Fire Department is rolling out free Fire Safety Checks while launching its annual fan drive to help residents stay safe and cool this summer.
The City of Mount Vernon Fire Department’s Community Risk Reduction Bureau announced that Fire Safety Checks are now available to all residents. The walkthroughs, offered at no cost, include inspecting smoke alarm placement and operation, testing carbon monoxide detectors, reviewing fire escape plans, and identifying electrical or heating hazards. Residents can schedule by calling (740) 395‑9515 ext. 2 or emailing [email protected].
“Serving our community with pride since 1849, we are here to give you peace of mind at absolutely no cost,” the City stated in its announcement.
The program is designed to prevent small issues from becoming emergencies.
"Open to all Mount Vernon residents, this quick service focuses on identifying potential hazards before they become a problem," the announcement stated.
At the same time, the department is asking for public support through its annual fan drive. Donations of new box fans are being accepted at Station 491, located at 200 W. Gambier Street. The fans will be distributed by Interchurch Social Services to residents in need.
“We are now accepting new box fans. If you'd like to donate one, you can drop it off at Station 491,” the department posted on Facebook.
The call for donations comes as forecasters warn of rising temperatures.
“Next week looks to be heating up and fans will be needed. Drop off a new fan to help others stay cool!” the department added in a follow‑up post.
Interchurch will deliver the donated fans to vulnerable residents, including seniors and families without air conditioning. The drive has become a seasonal fixture, reflecting the department’s commitment to practical relief alongside emergency response.
Together, the two initiatives highlight how Mount Vernon firefighters extend their role beyond fire calls, combining safety education with community care. By pairing prevention with immediate assistance, the department continues to position itself as both protector and neighbor.
