Danville Public Library and community partners are offering a summer lineup of book discussions, wildlife encounters, and family activities.

It has already brought dinosaurs and reptiles to life, and more programs are still ahead for readers and families.

Earlier in June, families enjoyed two interactive programs. On June 11, Dino Buddies visited Saint Luke’s Community Center, where lifelike dinosaur puppets, fun facts, and hands‑on learning captivated children and adults alike. Later in the month, on June 25, Realm of the Reptile introduced audiences to snakes, turtles, lizards, and more. Both programs blended education with entertainment, offering unforgettable encounters for young explorers.

The next schedule begins with the Adult Book Discussion on The One-Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin, set for Tuesday, June 30, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Council Room of the Danville Public Library. The program is free and open to adults age 18 and older, with books available at the library.

The library’s summer programming is designed to bring together literature, nature, and community celebration. Events range from quiet discussions to lively outdoor programs, ensuring opportunities for residents of all ages to participate.

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary will present Birds of Prey on Thursday, July 2, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Y‑Sports Center, 200 W. Chestnut St., Mount Vernon. Visitors will meet hawks, owls, and possibly even an eagle during this educational program.

“You’ll learn fascinating facts about each bird’s unique adaptations, hunting skills, and role in the ecosystem, while meeting these feathered ambassadors face‑to‑face,” organizers said in announcing the event.

The summer continues with the Danville Summer Reading Program Closing Party on Thursday, July 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Danville Memorial Park, 802 S. Market St. Registration, which began on May 29, is required. Activities include a pizza party lunch, crafts, games, and a scavenger hunt with a prize for the final winner. In case of rain, the event will move to the Council Room.

Later in the month, the Danville Book Discussion returns with Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz on Tuesday, July 28, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Council Room. The program is free and open to adults age 18 and older, with books available at the library.

The library also continues its 1KB4K initiative, encouraging families to read 1,000 books before kindergarten. Danville Library emphasizes that reading together helps children develop print awareness, letter knowledge, vocabulary, and narrative skills. Parents can register at the circulation desk for a reading bag and log, and call 740‑599‑BOOK for more information.
