The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County announced a presentation titled "Why Dig Ohio? Archaeology, Geology, and the Human Connection to the Ohio Valley" will take place on Wednesday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Multipurpose Room at the library’s main location at 201 N. Mulberry Street in Mount Vernon.

Sarah Hinkelman, Site Superintendent of the Newark Earthworks and Flint Ridge for the Ohio History Connection, will lead the discussion. Hinkelman is scheduled to address how the unique landscape of the Ohio Valley has influenced human activity over thousands of years.

According to organizers, "The Ohio Valley is more than just a place. By examining the dynamic historical, archaeological, and geological record of human interaction with the environment, researchers can learn how people have continuously adapted to and transformed the landscape in complex and unexpected ways."

The presentation is part of an ongoing Local History Speaker Series hosted by the library. Community members interested in sharing their own work or research related to history or events in Mount Vernon and Knox County are encouraged to contact the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County by phone at (740) 392-2665 or email at [email protected].

Library staff said they hope attendees will participate in this exploration of local history and consider contributing their own stories for future programs.
