The City of Mount Vernon announced that its annual Spring Clean-Up Day will take place on Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to noon in front of the Schnormeier Events Center at Ariel Foundation Park.

This year’s event will be open to all Knox County residents, with proof of residency possibly required. Previously, the clean-up was limited to city residents, but last year’s partnership with Knox County Recycling and Litter Prevention expanded participation countywide.

Residents can bring large unwanted items, old furniture, or general junk for disposal. Participants are responsible for unloading their own materials; however, volunteers will be available to assist. There is no limit on the number of loads per participant. The cost is $20 per load and payment can be made by cash, check (payable to "City of Mount Vernon" with "Spring Clean-Up" in the memo), or credit card.

No trailer or dumping will be permitted and all materials must be disposed of by hand. Large furniture items such as mattresses may be stacked behind Dumpsters. Participants must provide their own protective equipment like gloves and eye protection.

Certain materials are not permitted at the event: hazardous or toxic wastes, asbestos-containing materials, lead acid batteries, oil or auto parts, infectious or bio-hazardous waste, steel drums or structures, ashes, dead animals, liquids, tires, yard waste, construction materials, or appliances containing CFCs such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

The City also plans to hold a Fall Clean-Up Day in October with the date yet to be announced. More information is available from the organization's press release.
