Centerburg High School announced on Apr. 24 that construction of a new baseball field on the high school campus will begin this spring, with the facility expected to be ready for use in 2027.

The addition of the new baseball field is seen as an important development for both student athletes and community members. The facility aims to improve accessibility and provide a safer, more convenient environment for practices and games.

Athletic Director Rich Porter said one major benefit is having the field located directly on campus where students are present, making it easier for fans to attend. "It will be ADA compliant, which the other field is not," he said. "It's very challenging over there from a fan perspective." Porter explained that the current field beside the elementary school presents parking challenges due to its distance and steep terrain.

Head Coach Josh Moss highlighted how moving the facility onto campus will keep activities connected with the school day and reduce logistical issues. "While the previous field is only a short drive away," he said, "having to commute off campus adds challenges with player arrival coinciding with elementary release, bussing, and pick up/drop off lines all using the same entrance/exit." Moss also noted several upgrades: "Unlike the old field, the new facility will have access to water," he said, "making it easier to properly maintain the playing surface throughout the season. Parking and access will be greatly improved, with more available parking and shorter walks to the bleachers."

Porter added that some preparatory work has already been completed as part of earlier projects: "Some of the tiles have already been installed," he said, "and some of the electric service has been run as well." The new field will feature a natural grass playing surface along with an irrigation system.

The Centerburg Diamond Club played a key role in fundraising efforts for this project. Vice President Matt Campbell stated that they contributed $75,000 toward construction costs: "We are proud, gracious and humbled that our efforts have already yielded great results thanks to the generosity of many businesses and individuals," he said.

Looking ahead, Moss emphasized another benefit: having two fields instead of one means greater opportunities for middle school teams and local leagues. Sophomore Gabe Campos summed up player sentiment by saying: "I'm looking forward to just having a better atmosphere when we play the game."
