Knox Public Health announced that Knox County residents are encouraged to participate in the DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 25. The event is designed to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs and educate the public about the potential for medication abuse.

According to Knox Public Health, the collection day is coordinated in partnership with local law enforcement agencies. Residents are asked to place unwanted, expired, or unused medications in a clear Ziploc bag before delivering them to any of five drop-off locations across the county. The event will also collect unwanted syringes.

The designated drop-off sites include Knox Public Health at 11660 Upper Gilchrist Road and Mount Vernon Health Center at 202 West Vine Street in Mount Vernon; Danville Police Department at 512 South Market Street in Danville; Centerburg Foster’s Pharmacy at 4584 Columbus Road in Centerburg; and Fredericktown Police Department at 182 South Main Street in Fredericktown.

For those unable to attend on April 25, free Deterra Drug Deactivation pouches are available from Knox Public Health for safe destruction of medications, liquids, and patches at home. Additionally, year-round disposal drop-boxes are located throughout Knox County at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Fredericktown Police Department, Danville Police Department, and Mount Vernon Police Department. Liquids, inhalers, sharps, or illegal substances should not be placed in these drop boxes.
