Habitat for Humanity of Knox County is inviting families to apply for its Project Playhouse program.
The program provides custom-built playhouses for children while raising funds to support Habitat's broader goal of constructing safe, decent homes in the community.
"Project Playhouse is a special program from Habitat for Humanity of Knox County that brings the pride and joy of homeownership through play to local kids," the organization said. "It’s all about giving children a safe, fun place to play while supporting Habitat’s mission to build more affordable homes right here in Knox County."
Families living in Knox County who meet income guidelines, specifically those earning under 80 percent of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Area Median Income, are eligible to apply. Applicants must provide documentation as part of the process, and the number of families accepted will depend on the number of playhouses available.
Each playhouse is designed and built by volunteer teams, typically requiring five to six hours of work with eight to 10 volunteers. Once complete, the families are responsible for picking up and transporting the playhouse to their home. The finished product offers children a safe, imaginative space to play while symbolizing the pride of homeownership.
Proceeds from the program directly benefit Habita's efforts to expand affordable housing opportunities in Knox County.
Applications can be downloaded from Habitat's website at https://www.hfhknoxoh.org/project-playhouse. After submission, Habitat staff will review the materials and contact families who pass the initial screening.
For questions, families may email [email protected] or call 740-324-5407.
Knox County Habitat for Humanity traces its roots to 1987, when Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller visited First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mount Vernon. Inspired by Fuller’s message of service and community, members of the church organized and chartered a local affiliate dedicated to building homes for families in need.
