The Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) has reported a 7% increase in overnight trips by visitors, resulting in 650,000 visit nights.

"If we didn't have the impact of the sales tax that happens within tourism locally, that would cost our taxpayers an extra $400 of what they're paying," said Knox CVB Board Chair Victoria Preston during a video of the Knox County Board of Commissioners' December 4 meeting.

According to the meeting video, Preston emphasized the significance of overnight tourism for the Knox CVB. The organization relies on the hotel bed tax to promote tourism in the county, making an increase in overnight stays crucial. She noted that data indicates visitors are staying an average of two-and-a-half to three nights, with a typical demographic being young families of four. The Knox CVB and its partners aim to ensure amenities and attractions are available to encourage longer stays.

Preston also mentioned that, according to state data, 58% of people visiting Ohio have friends and family in the state. The Knox CVB seeks to be a community leader by informing residents about local attractions so they can invite family members for enjoyable weekend visits.

Additionally, Preston highlighted how the Knox CVB utilizes its Placer.ai platform to track visitor behavior, including their activities after attending events like shows or festivals. In many cases, visitors sought dining options afterward. Preston indicated that discussions with partners led to suggestions for offering specials or extending business hours to accommodate visitor needs.
