The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men's basketball team maintained its unbeaten streak by defeating the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers 97-78 during the homecoming weekend at Ariel Arena. This victory brings MVNU's record to 6-0, while UNOH falls to 2-4.
In the first half, Trent Koning was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three free throws, helping MVNU extend its lead to double digits at 28-16. The Cougars ended the half with a buzzer-beater layup from Peyton Heiss, leading 51-36.
Despite efforts from UNOH in the second half, including a layup by Jyheim Spencer that narrowed the gap to ten points at 70-60, MVNU held firm. Isaiah Brown's dunk widened the lead to 81-62 with just over seven minutes remaining. Grant Burkholder's free throw with a minute left secured MVNU's largest lead of 25 points.
Isaiah Brown led MVNU's offense with a career-high of 29 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Koning contributed 19 points along with five rebounds and four assists. Heiss added 13 points and nine rebounds. Reed Platfoot led in rebounds with 11 and also scored 12 points.
MVNU shot 45.5% from the field and capitalized on turnovers by scoring 19 points off UNOH's mistakes. They dominated in rebounding as well, outmatching UNOH by a margin of 54-39.
Coach Ronai expressed satisfaction with his team's defensive performance: "Homecoming is always a special game. Thankful for all alumni that came back and spent Friday night inside Ariel Arena. I thought our guys were really locked in defensively tonight."
Looking ahead, MVNU will face the University of Saint Francis in their first conference game on November 19 at Ariel Arena.
