The Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) women's basketball team narrowly lost to Governors State University in the Chick-Fil-A Classic at Olivet Nazarene University. The game ended with a 67-66 score, marking MVNU's first loss of the season.
MVNU started strong, leading 15-12 after the first quarter. However, Governors State, a team that reached the NAIA Final Four last season, took control in the second quarter with a 28-15 run, leading 40-30 at halftime. The Lady Cougars fought back in the third quarter, reducing the deficit to three points with a buzzer-beater from Lily Shepherd.
In the final minutes, MVNU closed in on Governors State's lead. Melodie Blubaugh hit a crucial three-pointer and followed up with a layup to bring MVNU within two points. Angela Roshak tied the game at 66 with less than a minute remaining. Despite their efforts, MVNU could not capitalize on their final possession after Governors State split free throws for a one-point lead.
Kylie Leibacher led MVNU with 22 points and five rebounds. Lily Shepherd contributed 15 points off the bench, while Anna Swisshelm added 11 points and Angela Roshak finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
Coach VanHoose expressed gratitude for playing against such high-level competition early in the season: "Very thankful we had the opportunity to play a team like Governors State this early in the season."
MVNU will face Olivet Nazarene University next as they conclude their participation in the Chick-Fil-A Classic.
