Every October, the nation observes National Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month, focusing on the 1.3 million individuals residing in nursing homes and other care facilities. This observance highlights the importance of residents' rights to dignity, choice, and quality of life as outlined by the federal Nursing Home Reform Law.
In line with this year's theme, "Stand with Me," the State Office of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman has introduced the Ohio Residents’ Rights Council. This initiative is a quarterly virtual forum for over 900 nursing home Resident Council presidents to share their insights and experiences. The aim is to enhance life in long-term care communities across Ohio.
The Ohio District 5 Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program supports this initiative. They advocate for residents by resolving complaints and educating them about their rights. This program is part of a broader effort by the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc., which serves consumers in 95 long-term care facilities across nine counties.
Beverly Tatro, Director of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program at Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, encourages community involvement during Residents’ Rights Month. She invites people to connect with residents or consider volunteering as ombudsmen to show support for these valued community members.
