Urban Soils Team (L-R): Izzy Barron, Phoebe Mussard, Calleigh Armstrong, Colton Stagg and Simon Ruprecht | Mount Vernon FFA

Mount Vernon FFA students have advanced to the State Soils Contest after competing in the District Soils Career Development Event (CDE) on September 30 in Rushville, Ohio. The event tested participants' abilities to evaluate soil properties and make land-use decisions.

Both Mount Vernon's Urban Soils Team and Rural/Agricultural Soils Team performed well, earning third and fifth places respectively, which qualified them for the state contest. Individual members also excelled, with Izzy Barron securing third place, Madison Seng sixth, and Phoebe Mussard tenth among district competitors.

"The district contest is always a big step up in competition, and I’m proud of how our students represented Mount Vernon," said Stephanie Plumly, FFA advisor. "Qualifying both teams for state is a huge accomplishment."

The teams will compete at the State Soils Contest on October 11.
