The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is seeking volunteers to assist with tax preparation for senior citizens at the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County and over 200 other locations across Ohio. This initiative provides free tax services, helping seniors save on fees and easing their tax filing process.
Volunteers play a crucial role by saving financially pressed seniors the cost of hiring private preparers. Last year, volunteers at the library filed 398 federal and state returns, saving clients an estimated $100,000 in fees and securing an average refund of nearly $1,175 per person. Due to high demand last season, many prospective clients were turned away due to a lack of volunteers.
With significant changes in the tax code expected next year, the need for volunteers is anticipated to rise. Ideal candidates include those who manage their own taxes. Volunteers receive IRS-approved training and support while working on computers provided by the AARP Foundation. All work is double-checked, ensuring accuracy.
Volunteers come from diverse backgrounds such as beauticians, accountants, truck drivers, and managers. There are also roles available for those not interested in preparing returns but willing to manage appointments or provide technical support.
