The Knox County Historical Society is set to host a special program on September 3 at the Knox County Memorial Building, located at 112 East High St. The event will commemorate the beginning of the building's service in 1925. Attendees are reminded that this is the regular monthly program and should go directly to the Memorial Building by 7:30 pm instead of the Museum site on Harcourt Road.
The Knox County Memorial Building was dedicated on May 25, 2025, as part of a national initiative after World War I to honor veterans. The first use of the building occurred on February 4, 1926. The society aims to celebrate and remember the century-long history of events and stories associated with the building.
John Nixon, who has been a technical manager for the theater for many years, will share his experiences and stories during the event. Following his presentation, there will be a tour of various parts of the building, including Veterans Hall and the ballroom. Boards from the Memorial Building’s cupola, signed by locals and performers over a span of 90 years and removed during renovations in 2014, will also be displayed.
The program is free and open to everyone, as are all monthly programs hosted by the society. An additional event titled "Hidden Gems" will take place on November 19 at 6:30 pm at the Main Library on Mulberry Street in collaboration with the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County. Michael Sherfy from the library staff will lead this discussion focusing on memorabilia from Veterans Hall and playbills from past performances.
In October, Mark Jordan will present stories from his new book "In These Haunted Hills," which includes tales from Knox County. This event is scheduled for October 1 at 7:30 pm at the museum.
