The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team opened their season with a 3-1 victory against Shawnee State University on Saturday, August 23. The match took place in Mount Vernon, Ohio, marking the first game of the season for both teams.
In the first half, MVNU's defense was strong, allowing only one shot from Shawnee State while taking eight shots themselves. The half ended without any goals. Early in the second half, Alexis Hoffman scored a penalty kick after a foul in the box, giving MVNU a 1-0 lead. Shawnee State's Annie Coriell equalized in the 77th minute. However, MVNU quickly responded when Bekah Blair scored another penalty kick following a handball by Shawnee State.
Hoffman secured the win with her second goal in the 87th minute. She had four shots on goal and two goals overall. Blair contributed three shots on goal and one goal. Cora Bishop also added a shot on goal for MVNU. Overall, MVNU outshot Shawnee State 17-7.
Goalkeeper Hannah Miller played the entire match for MVNU and made four saves.
MVNU will play their next game against Cleary University (Mich.) on Wednesday, August 27 at 5:00 p.m.
