The Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) has announced that David Szewczuk of Mount Vernon, Ohio, received a Quilt of Valor from the Grateful Quilters of Ohio on August 11, 2025. This recognition honors his service and sacrifice.

According to QOVF, Szewczuk served as a sonar technician in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. He was assigned to the USS James E Kyes DD 787 Destroyer, where he monitored and helped defend against Red Eye missiles along the coast of South Vietnam. He also served aboard the USS Chicago CG-11 Guided Missile Cruiser, performing anti-air warfare duties in the same region. Both ships operated in the Pacific theater during multiple conflicts and were continually upgraded with advanced technology. Szewczuk earned the distinction of "crossing the equator."

The Quilts of Valor Foundation aims to provide comfort and healing by awarding quilts to service members and veterans affected by war.

Founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts after a vivid dream about a soldier finding comfort in a quilt, QOVF's mission is to provide high-quality quilts to military service members and veterans as a symbol of gratitude for their service and sacrifice. The foundation relies on volunteers who donate time and materials to create these quilts, which are formally awarded to recipients. The organization emphasizes craftsmanship and respect, ensuring each quilt conveys appreciation rather than being seen as a simple charity item.
