The City of Mount Vernon has commenced the expansion of Mound View Cemetery to address increasing demand and limited burial space. The project will add over 1,200 new grave sites in two newly designed sections. As of July 2025, only 240 full-sized grave sites remain available at the cemetery, all located within Section T.

To ensure ongoing service to the community, planning for the expansion began in 2024. In May 2024, Grever & Ward, Inc., a nationally recognized cemetery planning and design firm, was hired to conduct site surveys and develop designs for Sections R and S. The design work started in August 2024, with final maps and plans delivered earlier this year.

Excavation work began this month with Beheler Excavating handling the site preparation. Initial tasks included terminating existing grass for grading purposes. Topsoil is being removed and stockpiled for future use during final grading. After rough grading is complete, the site will be shaped according to design specifications, with permanent markers installed throughout.

The expansion will result in a total of 1,256 additional burial sites: Section R will have 502 grave sites and Section S will have 754 grave sites. "This expansion is an important investment for our community’s future generations," said Mount Vernon Mayor Matthew Starr. "Mound View Cemetery is not only a final resting place but a space of peace, memory and history."
