Mount Vernon displays historic flags for city's anniversary

The City of Mount Vernon has introduced a special addition to its Public Square as part of the city's 220th birthday celebrations and in anticipation of the America 250 semiquincentennial. Two flags, which were flown over President George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia on June 1, 2025, are now displayed in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

The flags include a traditional American flag and a replica of General George Washington's personal Commander-in-Chief Standard. The latter is historically significant, featuring a deep blue field with 13 six-pointed white stars representing the original colonies. This banner was used during Washington's leadership of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War.

These flags were raised on June 5, 2025, symbolizing the connection between Mount Vernon, Ohio, and America's founding father. The display is part of an ongoing effort to honor history leading up to America's 250th birthday in 2026.

"We are deeply honored to fly these flags on the Public Square," said Mayor Matthew Starr. "They are a meaningful tribute not only to our City's heritage but also to the enduring values that George Washington represented – courage, leadership and service to the common good."

Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the Public Square to view these flags and reflect on their shared legacy.
