Centerburg High School's varsity softball team concluded its season with a commendable 15-10 record and achieved the status of district runner-up under the guidance of first-year coach Chuck Shank.
The team set out with three primary objectives: to win the Kankakee Metro Athletic Conference (KMAC), maintain a winning record, and advance to the district tournament. While Centerburg finished third in the KMAC, they succeeded in securing a winning record and advancing deep into district play.
"Our biggest strengths were hitting and fielding," said Shank. "Our three seniors — Chesnee Fairall, Harley Webb, and Kayla Ferrell — led by example and provided tremendous leadership." The coach highlighted a significant challenge: a shortage of players and the absence of a junior varsity team, which limited playing time and development. "Not having a JV team really hurt us and cost us two players," he added.
Looking ahead, Centerburg aims to capture the KMAC title and win districts next season, with hopes of making a strong run in the state tournament. The program also plans to add a pitching coach and possibly another assistant to the staff.
Despite these obstacles, Shank praised the team's culture and the quality of their home field. "We have one of the finest fields in the area and a dedicated group of players ready to build on this season’s success."
