The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon has announced the recipients of the John Philip Sousa Awards, which recognize outstanding band members from each high school in Knox County.
According to a press release, the awards were presented during a club meeting attended by honorees, their families, band directors, and club members. Each recipient received a wall plaque, a framed certificate, and a pin in recognition of their musical achievements and leadership.
Dylan Meier from Centerburg High School participated in various bands including Marching, Symphonic, and Jazz Bands. He also performed with Mount Vernon Nazarene University's (MVNU) Jazz Band and earned spots in several honor bands. Meier showcased versatility through trombone solos, musical theater performances, and served as drum major during his senior year. He plans to attend Ohio Wesleyan University to major in Pre-Med while remaining active in music.
Kay Stimpert from Danville High School demonstrated consistent dedication as a flute player and leader. She earned superior ratings across multiple instruments in solo ensemble contests and performed with the Knox County Symphony Orchestra. Stimpert plans to major in Forensic Examination at West Virginia University and perform with the university’s marching band.
Adrianna Price from East Knox High School was active in Concert and Marching Bands as well as other extracurricular activities such as FFA, Student Council, and cheerleading while working at McDonald’s. As Senior Class President, she mentored younger band students. Price will study Music Education at Bowling Green State University and join their Marching and Concert Bands.
Pink Payne from Fredericktown High School served as mellophone section leader and band commander. Payne formed a French horn quartet for Solo and Ensemble competitions to inspire others.
Lillian Percy from Mount Vernon High School participated in multiple band ensembles. She was involved in Key Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, among other academic and service groups.
The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon is a community service organization established in 1953 with support from the Alexandria Kiwanis Club. Originally formed by local businessmen, it joined Kiwanis International to expand its impact. The club continues to serve the community through regular meetings, service projects, and youth programs aimed at supporting children and local initiatives.
