Mount Vernon is set to unveil its new splash pad at Riverside Park on Saturday, May 24, with festivities beginning at 10 a.m.
According to a city news release, the event will mark the grand opening of Captain Hunter's Landing, a pirate-themed splash pad. The celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring free pizza and various pirate-themed activities suitable for all ages.
In April 2024, Mount Vernon News reported that Ariel Corp. offered $1.315 million to fund the splash pad project, which includes a restroom facility and pump house that could serve as a covered patio, along with maintenance costs for ten years. Ariel Chief Financial Officer Brian Huprich said in a letter that the project holds significant meaning for both the Wright Family and Ariel Corp., as it honors Hunter Wright's memory. Wright was known for his community involvement and philanthropy until his passing on October 4, 2021.
