The Fredericktown FFA recently participated in the state contest for the General Livestock Career Development Event (CDE). This event is aimed at helping members identify quality production livestock animals and their traits. Participants evaluate several animals in classes based on appearance, movement, and other characteristics. They may also consider records and data.
The animal classes can include any species of livestock, such as swine, cattle, and sheep. Members might also assess animal classes based on market qualities. Competitors determine which animals to keep or sell in the keep or cull classes. Participants answer questions about the classes, with each member scored on their responses and overall performance in the contest.
The skills acquired through evaluating general livestock are intended to enhance students' abilities as livestock producers and consumers by providing practical experience in identifying characteristics that affect production and quality.
"Our team this year took 174th place in Ohio," said a spokesperson for Fredericktown FFA. The team members included Austin Frazier, Trey Levering, and Austin Robinson. The Fredericktown FFA Advisor is Debra Burden.
