The American Red Cross is urging the public to schedule blood donation appointments in May, ahead of the busy summer season. The organization emphasizes the importance of donating blood and platelets during Trauma Awareness Month to ensure hospitals are prepared for emergencies.
"Emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time, without a moment’s notice," the Red Cross states. "By giving blood to the Red Cross, donors can help ensure blood is ready for patients in the most critical situations."
The Red Cross highlights that Type O blood donors and platelet donors are particularly needed. "Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to any person, no matter their blood type. This makes it essential in the most dire situations," they explain. Additionally, "Type O positive blood is the most used blood type because it can be transfused to Rh-positive patients of any blood type." Platelets are also crucial as they help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding.
To encourage donations, those who donate between May 1-18 will receive a $20 e-gift card. Donors from May 19-31 will receive an exclusive solar lantern while supplies last. All donors in May will automatically enter a chance to win a U.S. trip for two.
Blood donation events are scheduled across various locations including Fredericktown High School, Community Christian Fellowship in Gambier, East Knox High School in Howard, Moose Lodge and The Glenn A. Gallagher Centre in Mount Vernon, Church of the Ascension Worship Center in Johnstown, Newark OH Blood Donation Center, Faith and Family Center in Newark, and West Licking County Family YMCA in Pataskala.
Potential donors can schedule appointments via the American Red Cross Blood Donor App or by visiting RedCrossBlood.org. They may also call 1-800-RED CROSS or use Alexa Echo devices.
