Representatives Beth Lear, Mark Hiner, and Senator Andrew Brenner have recognized a group of student-athletes and coaches from Mount Vernon City Schools at the Ohio Statehouse for their achievements in the 2024-2025 wrestling season.
Those honored included state qualifiers Mavrik Gregory, Luke Mullins, and Jake Taylor, who achieved a sixth-place finish at the state tournament. Recognition was extended to athletes who won Conference, Sectional, District, or State Titles.
Notably, Alex Taylor achieved the distinction of being Mount Vernon's first boys' state wrestling champion, while Ash Brokaw became the girls' state champion. These achievements have elevated the standing of the Mount Vernon wrestling program in Ohio.
Coaches Corey Firebaugh and Matthew Lybarger received acknowledgment for their roles in the boys' program, and Jay Depolo and Meghan Randall were recognized for their leadership of the girls' team. Coach Firebaugh expressed his satisfaction, stating, "I am incredibly honored to have our athletes and our program recognized by our State leaders."
Superintendent Bill Seder voiced his pride in the team: “We are incredibly proud of our team’s accomplishments and how our team and coaches have represented Mount Vernon.”
The event underscored the strength of school athletics and highlighted the impact of mentorship and teamwork in Mount Vernon's wrestling program.
