Eligible Ohio residents aged 60 and older can apply for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) in 2025, as announced by the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA). The program offers $50 worth of fresh produce, herbs, and honey. Applications are available online through Homegrown Benefits, ODA's partner.
"The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a fantastic way for older Ohioans to get fresh produce from their communities while also helping Ohio farmers find new customers," said ODA Director Ursel J. McElroy. "By providing additional methods for older Ohioans to get healthy food into their diets and make smart lifestyle choices, we are continuing our mission to make Ohio the best place to age in the nation."
Eligibility requires participants to be at least 60 years old and earn less than 185% of the federal poverty level. Reapplication is necessary each year. Approved applicants will receive benefits starting May 15, either digitally via a smartphone app or through physical membership cards.
Residents in Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Morgan, Monroe, Noble, Perry, and Washington counties must apply through Buckeye Hills Regional Council and will receive traditional coupons instead of app access.
Applications close on September 30, with funds needing to be spent by November 30. Participants are encouraged to keep their physical cards for future use if reapproved next year.
The transition from printed coupons to an app-based model last year aims to provide flexibility and reduce costs. The SFMNP supports local agriculture by increasing revenue for farmers and markets while enhancing community engagement among older adults.
