Scott Zimmerman has resumed his role as city inspector for the City of Mount Vernon, beginning his duties on April 7.
"First of all, I’d like to express how thrilled I am to be back and to be able to serve the community that we live in and that I’ve grown up in," Zimmerman said, according to a City of Mount Vernon news release. "Secondly, I have 30-plus years of public service between the state and local governments. In those 30 years, I have come to treasure the privilege of serving the members of our community and helping protect and sustain its growth in a positive way."
According to the release, the city council established the city inspector position through legislation adopted on February 24. The city inspector is tasked with ensuring compliance with zoning and property maintenance regulations, utility inspections, and other duties related to city ordinances. Zimmerman will conduct inspections of residential, commercial, and public properties to verify adherence to state and local regulations.
Zimmerman began his public service career at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center, where he worked from 1984 through 1997. He then spent two years at Ariel Corp. before returning to public service with the city's Street Department. His roles included traffic signal technician and foreman of the Parks Department before being promoted to superintendent of parks' building and lands. In 2016, he became director of Ariel-Foundation Park. Since 2018, he has operated Complete Maintenance LLC, a small tree service and herbicide business.
An assistant city inspector will work under Zimmerman; this position is currently being filled after previously being held by Greg Bemiller as code enforcement officer until his retirement at the end of February.
"Mount Vernon is growing; there’s more and more going on here every year, and we’ve made great progress at keeping our city looking its best," said Mayor Matthew Starr in the release. "And I have every confidence Scott will continue with what we’ve accomplished and improve on our practices."
