Knox County Local Food Council has announced its initiative to coordinate community gardens aimed at supporting local food growth. This announcement was made in a press release on March 19, 2025.
According to the Knox County Local Food Council, residents are encouraged to grow their own fruits and vegetables by utilizing four community gardens located in Mount Vernon, Ohio. These gardens—Arch Park, Community Roots, Faith Lutheran Church, and Vine & Lawn—offer plots with water, basic tools, and fencing provided to support gardeners. With spring approaching, the council suggests that now is an ideal time for planning and planting.
The council supports several community gardens in Mount Vernon. Arch Park Community Garden at 200 Arch Avenue offers garden plots and has adopted innovative practices like Hugelkultur to improve soil health and water retention. Community Roots at 1106 West Gambier Street provides gardening opportunities for both novice and experienced gardeners, promoting community engagement and sustainable agriculture.
Faith Lutheran Church's garden at 170 Mansfield Avenue supplies fresh vegetables to those in need through various local organizations. This reflects the church's commitment to outreach and service. Additionally, Vine & Lawn Community Garden at 1009 East Vine Street provides plots for residents to cultivate their own produce, encouraging healthy living and community involvement.
The Knox County Local Food Council aims to expand access to fresh, healthy, and affordable local foods while supporting a robust local food system. The council comprises local agencies, businesses, organizations, and individuals collaborating to assist farmers markets, community gardens, local producers, and food assistance programs. Through these efforts, the council seeks to connect the community with locally sourced food resources that contribute to a sustainable and resilient food network.
