The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association (MVLA) has awarded the Ann Pamela Cunningham Medal to Karen Buchwald Wright, a resident of Mount Vernon, Ohio. The announcement was made in a press release on March 12, 2025.
Wright has been a dedicated supporter of Mount Vernon for nearly two decades, contributing significantly to its preservation efforts, educational programs, and the Washington Library through her philanthropy and leadership. As a member of both the Advisory Committee and Washington Cabinet, she has played an essential role in advancing Mount Vernon's mission. According to MVLA, Wright is the first woman to receive this prestigious medal, which honors her lasting commitment to George Washington's legacy.
The Ann Pamela Cunningham Medal represents the highest honor given by the MVLA. It is awarded only in rare instances to individuals or organizations that demonstrate exceptional dedication to George Washington and the preservation of Mount Vernon. Designed by artist Christopher Erney and produced by Monnaie de Paris, the medal features an image of Ann Pamela Cunningham on one side and Mount Vernon's east front on the other, with the inscription "Awarded for Extraordinary Service."
Anne Neal Petri, regent of the association, said in the press release: "Karen Buchwald Wright embodies a unique story of patriotic commitment." Petri added that Wright was born on July 4th and resides in Mount Vernon, Ohio. She said it was perhaps foreordained that Wright would dedicate her time, resources, and talent to advancing George Washington and his home on the Potomac.
Founded in 1853, MVLA is recognized as the oldest historic preservation organization in the United States and is also noted as the first women's patriotic society. It is dedicated to protecting George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate while educating the public about his legacy. The MVLA owns and operates various components of the estate including the mansion, museum, gardens, Washington's tombs, a working farm, distillery, and George Washington Presidential Library.
