The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets overcame a challenging first half to secure a 65-45 victory over Newark Catholic in boys' basketball on Tuesday night. This win improved Mount Vernon's record to 6-4, while Newark Catholic fell to 2-6.
According to the game's statistics, the Yellow Jackets trailed 25-22 at halftime but delivered a commanding second-half performance, outscoring their opponents 43-20. "We did not play very well in the first half and found ourselves trailing," said Mount Vernon head coach Nick Coon. He credited his players for their response and togetherness in the second half, adding that they need to continue learning and improving.
Mount Vernon's junior guard Zane Barber led the offensive effort with 20 points and four rebounds. His shooting accuracy and transition scoring were pivotal in regaining control of the game. Isaiah Columber also made significant contributions with a double-double of 13 points, ten rebounds, and three assists.
The team benefited from balanced scoring across its roster. Quentin Rowland added 12 points, Trace Beck contributed eight points, and Nikos Giakoumas provided a strong all-around performance with four points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
Newark Catholic's senior Dylan Daube was a standout performer for his team with a team-high of 14 points. However, Newark struggled to maintain consistent scoring throughout the game.
Mount Vernon's defense was instrumental in their success during the final two quarters by limiting Newark Catholic's scoring opportunities and forcing turnovers that led to fast-break points. "We didn’t execute in the first half, but our defense tightened up after halftime," Coon said.
Looking forward, Mount Vernon is set to face Granville this Saturday at home. Coach Coon expressed eagerness for the upcoming challenge against what he described as a tough opponent. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School.
