Mount Vernon celebrates Fourth of July at Ariel-Foundation Park

Mount Vernon's Independence Day commemoration will be held on Thursday, July 4, culminating with a fireworks display soon after dusk at Ariel-Foundation Park. Personal fireworks are not permitted on Ariel-Foundation Park property.

According to a Mount Vernon press release, the road through The Woods will close at 2 p.m. to secure the fireworks presentation area. Only pedestrian and accessible parking traffic will be allowed once the main park road in front of the Schnormeier Event Center (SEC) closes at 2 p.m. Pittsburgh Avenue will close from the Clock House parking lot to Seventh Avenue also starting at 2 p.m., except for residential traffic. The Lakes Area gate at South Madison Avenue will close at 10 p.m. Columbus Road will close to southbound traffic at 9:30 p.m. and will not reopen until the park clears after the fireworks.

The majority of parking will be available at The Lakes, entering from Madison Avenue, according to the press release, and also near the Clock House off Pittsburgh Avenue, and in the parking area off Harcourt Road. No parking will be allowed on the grass. Volunteers will help visitors park in designated areas only. Vehicles parked in timed public parking spaces won't receive a ticket on July 4.

The SEC closes for sound checks and related activities during the day, according to the press release. McLennon, a Beatles tribute band, will begin the concert series at 5 p.m., followed by acoustic duo Chaz and Nicki at 6 p.m. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band Tom the Torpedoes are headlining and will perform at 7 p.m. The fireworks show is scheduled to begin around 10 p.m.

Food service will begin at 5 p.m., with food vendors across from Urton Clock House and in front of SEC, according to the press release. Beer, wine, and liquor will be on sale in SEC but must only be consumed within its fenced area. Portable restrooms will be located on the west side of Schnormeier, on the north side of SEC's parking lot, west of Urton Clockhouse, and outside Kiwanis Pavilion on lakeside.
