Frederick Richard “Dick” Heffelfinger, 93, of Mount Vernon passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on July 6, 1930, in Mount Vernon, the son of Fred and Grace (Welsh) Heffelfinger.

Dick was a former employee of Cooper Energy Services and Kelsey-Hayes. He enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening and playing cards. He was a good husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and helped many people. Dick was a lifelong member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. He honorably served his country in the Army.

On Feb. 14, 1959, Dick married Frances (Wise). He is survived by his wife of 65 years; his children, Gary Heffelfinger of Mount Vernon, Gina (Terry) Bertiaux of Blacklick; and Lisa (Steve) Awwiller of Fredericktown; five grandchildren, Caitlyn (Jason Mauer) Newton, Jacob (Morgan) Newton, Grace (John) Rings, Ashley Awwiller and Delenn Heffelfinger; three great-grandchildren, Sophia, Penelope and Murphy; sister, Patricia (Dick) Rine of Howard; a sister-in-law, Linda Heffelfinger of Mount Vernon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by sisters, Kathryn Durbin, Thelma Peugh, Treva Talbott and Margene Stockdale; brothers, Donald and Paul Heffelfinger; and a daughter-in-law, Liza Marie Heffelfinger.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as the Celebrant. Burial followed in Mount Calvary Cemetery with Military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. The family received friends one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
