In light of recent safety concerns, public parking at the Mount Vernon municipal parking garage at 5 N. Gay Street is prohibited, effective immediately, until further notice, according to a press release from the Mount Vernon Office of the Safety-Service Director.

The press release states that the prohibition excludes four handicapped spots located on the third floor of the parking garage, accessible through the N. Gray entrance, which will remain available to the public for court-related use.

"The decision to prohibit public parking at the municipal parking garage arises from our commitment to safeguarding the public from potential risks and ensuring the limited exposure of vulnerable infrastructure," the press release stated. "This directive is a proactive measure aimed at mitigating any foreseeable safety hazards while we continue to plan the transition from the current Municipal Court facility to a new, modern facility in the coming years."

The city said it recognizes the inconvenience this may pose to members of the community who rely on the municipal parking garage for their parking needs. Alternative parking arrangements will be communicated in the coming days.
