West Holmes (6-4, 4-1) made it back-to-back wins with a 58-29 win over Zanesville (1-10, 1-4) on Jan. 4, with the girls’ basketball team led by a double-double effort for Aveona Yoder.
West Holmes jumped out to an early lead with Keegan Uhl nailing a three straight threes to go up 9-0. Uhl chipped on on defense with a steal, as well. Briar Cline made it a 12-3 lead on a three of her own, following a foul shot and a basket for Zanesville. Up 16-3, Proper got her hand on a pass and retained possession for a steal. Yoder hit a corner three to put West Holmes up 23-5, which was the score at the end of one quarter.
Zanesville bounced back to outscore West Holmes 10-7 in the second quarter, but West Holmes held a commanding 30-15 lead at halftime. Yoder had a steal in the quarter.
In the third quarter West Holmes was up 32-17 when Yoder continued her strong play on defense with a block. It was a 37-25 game when Jewel Brown got in on the defense with a steal. Brown drove to the hoop and couldn’t make the bucket, but on the next Zanesville possession, Proper stole the ball and took it coast to coast to put the Knights up 39-25.
West Holmes had a dominant 20-3 fourth quarter to close out the game, and the Knights cruised to 29-point win.
Yoder had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and she also posted four steals. Cline had 11 points, seven boards, five steals and four assists. Uhl scored 11 points and dished out three assists. Zalina Proper put up eight points and grabbed five boards. Nealie Fair had three points, Greta Rolince had two points and six boards, Allie McMillen had two points and three steals, and Brown had two points.
West Holmes shot 31% and 26% from three, while allowing 20% and 18%. They had a 40-31 advantage in rebounds, 11-3 in assists and 17-13 in steals.
